SP 101 Introduction to Spanish I | This course is intended for students with little or no exposure to the study of the Spanish language. Comprehension of basic principles of grammar is stressed, along with aural comprehension and development of oral communication skills. Writing of simple Spanish sentences is done from the beginning of the course so that a certain facility with the written language might be obtained within the course of the semester. This course is not for students who have taken the Spanish Regents’ examination in high school. This course fulfills the Foreign Culture and Language General Education requirement. |
SP 102 Introduction to Spanish II | This course is a continuation of SP 101 which stresses basic principles of grammar, aural comprehension and development of oral communication skills. Writing of simple Spanish sentences is continued as part of the course. This course is not intended for students who have completed three or more years of high school Spanish. This course fulfills the Foreign Culture and Language General Education requirement. |
SP 103 Introduction to Spanish III | This course is a continuation of the material begun in SP 102. Emphasis is placed upon principles of grammar, aural comprehension and the further development of oral and written communication skills. Credits: 3 |
SP 201 Intermediate Spanish I | Building on grammar and vocabulary learned in SP 103, this intermediate course continues the focus on grammar and vocabulary and increasing competence in the four linguistic skills and gaining an overview of Hispanic cultures. There is an emphasis on communication skills with the exclusive use of Spanish in class. This course fulfills the Foreign Culture and Language General Education requirement. |
SP 202 Intermediate Spanish II | Building on grammar and vocabulary learned in SP 201, this intermediate course continues the focus on grammar and vocabulary and increasing competence in the four linguistic skills and gaining an overview of Hispanic cultures. There is an emphasis on communication skills with the exclusive use of Spanish in class. |
SP 204 Jewels of Hispanic Literature: Spanish Literature in Translation | Providing an overview of the cultural background and history of Latin America through its literature, this course surveys Hispanic literature from the 18th-21st centuries. The course will be taught in both Spanish and English. This course fulfills the Foreign Culture and Language General Education requirement. |
SP 205 Spanish for Law Enforcement Officials | This course is intended for the upper-division student in the criminal justice or economic crime investigation programs, and may be of benefit to human services majors as well. It is a communication-focused course enabling students to function within a bi-lingual setting in the particular situation of law enforcement. Part of the course will entail an intensive review of grammar needed for this level of conversation. The rest of the course will focus on the oral and written communication skills allowing the professional to respond to those whose primary language is Spanish. This portion of the course will focus on conversational skills, documents, and forms used in the field and the development of the necessary vocabulary to respond in a variety of scenarios. This course is intended for students who have a working knowledge of the basic rules of Spanish grammar. This course fulfills the Foreign Culture and Language General Education requirement. |
SP 301 Conversation and Composition | This course is designed to elevate students' proficiency in spoken and written communication through dynamic conversation practice and advanced composition techniques. Emphasis is placed on developing fluency, critical thinking, and cultural awareness in real-world communicative contexts. There is an emphasis on advanced structures of Spanish grammar with the exclusive use of Spanish in class. |
